Social Thought

Posted on 4 December 201828 February 2019 by clogadmin

Back in August, I put up my first post here and announced that I would be using this new space for my future business in consulting. Although a consulting business is not totally out of the question, I am putting that on hold, for now, to focus on other things here in Alabama. The first 3 months consisted of the settling in process and that has finally worn off. Now that we have our space set up in a way that feels more like a home, my brain has been able to focus on other things. I am still working, part-time remote, for the company in Buffalo that I have been employed by for almost 6 years. 44-year-olds often only make friends through the workplace, and since I do not currently have a local place that I go to work each day, that is not happening.

All of this is to say that settling in has been super difficult and one of the things keeping me sane is listening to podcasts about current events. I lean, as you know, toward a feminist perspective, and so the podcasts I choose to spend my time on mostly revolve around feminist critics of pop culture and society, in general. Listening during the work day has given me a renewed interest in my former life as a sociology major and propelled me to a place where I feel the need to read and write about current events through an intersectional, feminist lens.

In order to facilitate this renewed love of critique, this space is now going to be committed to social and cultural thought. I will be writing think pieces on media and fame, using the conflict theories that I studied in my sociology program as a basis for thought on these topics. I hope to bring a fresh perspective to what can sometimes be perceived as a stodgy profession by infusing my critiques with light-hearted rants. I will cover every type of media that I ingest in these pieces and, eventually, break these pieces out into their own blog universe. So, we shall see how this goes. Wish me luck! I am committing to a minimum of 1 long form piece per week, to start, and then increase my output from there. If that works out, maybe a future podcast could be a thing?

I hope you will join me on this new adventure into pop culture and social thought. I am super excited for the opportunity to read and write in this field again and I hope that you are excited to follow along. Thank you for your time and, if you have a moment, please be sure to visit my other blog, Hippiegrrl Explains It All, where you can also take in some great social commentary on current events and politics.

Peace,

Chantale
